The incident occurred on I-95 in Westport on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023.

Alexander Gomez, age 33, of Westport, was charged on Thursday, April 11, by Connecticut State Police following an investigation.

According to the arrest report, a state police officer was patrolling I-95 in Westport when he saw a grey Infiniti travel across all three travel lanes into the grassy area of the Exit 18 gore area. The car collided with the sign.

Connecticut State Police said the car then traveled uncontrollably across all three travel lanes and collided with the center concrete barrier. The vehicle continued northbound and became disabled just north of Exit 18, blocking the right lane.

When the trooper approached the vehicle, he found a baby boy in a car seat that had turned upside down and a 7-year-old girl in the front passenger seat, state police said.

Gomez, who the trooper said was comatose and blueish, was behind the wheel with shallow or low breathing. The trooper administered rescue breathing until EMS arrived, and he was given a dose of Narcan and transported to the hospital, state police added.

The baby was rescued and given to a Good Samaritan until his grandmother arrived. The girl was unharmed.

A warrant was issued for his medical records, and along with the trooper's statements, Gomez was charged with:

  • Two counts of risk of injury to a child
  • Second-degree reckless endangerment
  • Operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Failure to drive in the proper lane
  • Violations of child restraint laws.

He was held on a $150,000 bond.
